It’s finally here – 12 Monkeys gives us a glimpse of a desperate future in the all-new trailer… and while it’s no Terry Gilliam, it certainly looks interesting.
Much like the original sci-fi flick, 12 Monkeys features Cole (Aaron Stanford) – a man sent back from a desolate future in an attempt to stop a violent plague being unleashed upon the Earth. But is there a lot more to it than being a simple, straight remake?
There are undoubtedly clear references to the original Terry Gilliam film. Perhaps most notably, the iconic stencilled monkey that appears throughout. But I can’t help thinking that Syfy’s ambitious remake could just take the story into uncharted territory.
“What do I do that is so monumental that the laws of physics are broken?”
It’s a question that will no doubt be answered throughout the series… but for now, it’s a bit of a mystery.
I have to admit, I once wondered why on earth 12 Monkeys needed to be remade into a television series… and with a number of TV remakes heading our way, it’s a question that crops up a lot more than it should.
But I get the feeling that 12 Monkeys could be very different.
It certainly looks like an exciting concept and while all the hallmarks of the original are there, I get the feeling it’ll also bring a lot of new material to the table. Of course, whether or not it manages to ignite the fan base remains to be seen. But it’s a promising start nonetheless.
