It’s been almost 50 years since 2001: A Space Odyssey wowed sci-fi fans… and now Ridley Scott is set to bring the sequel to life in an all-new TV show.
3001: The Final Odyssey has already been picked up by the Syfy channel, and promises a long-awaited follow up to the classic Kubrick sci-fi film. Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s sequel novel of the same name, it will be produced by Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker.
Of course, the fourth and final novel in the Odyssey series is set, as you might imagine, one thousand years after the events of the original film. And while Kubrick’s movie set a whole new standard for science fiction, it’s currently unknown how successful this new series might be. After all, there are very few details as yet.
But the official synopsis of the novel might give us some clues…
“One thousand years after the Jupiter mission to explore the mysterious Monolith had been destroyed, after Dave Bowman was transformed into the Star Child, Frank Poole drifted in space, frozen and forgotten, leaving the supercomputer HAL inoperable. But now Poole has returned to life, awakening in a world far different from the one he left behind–and just as the Monolith may be stirring once again….”
It’s certainly an interesting concept, and with a story that spans around thirty years, it’s likely to make a very easy transition to television rather than the shorter medium of film. And it looks as though Ridley Scott is already quite excited.
“I have always been a fan of Clarke’s extraordinary Odyssey series, and certainly Kubrick’s adaptation of 2001,” said Scott. “I am thrilled to be part of bringing that legacy to audiences and continuing the great cinematic tradition that this story and its creators deserve.”
3001: The Final Odyssey is expected to hit our screens by 2015.
