Captain Marvel could prove to be one of Marvel’s most important Phase Three films… and they apparently want Angelina Jolie at the helm.
According to OK! Magazine, the high-profile actress-turned-director is in talks to direct the upcoming Captain Marvel film… and has been offered a whopping $20 million.
“Having a female director is a priority for them,” explained their source… and with DC’s recent efforts to secure a female director for ‘Wonder Woman’, it’s likely that the pressure is on to match their rival’s efforts.
And Angelina Jolie is apparently rather pleased with the offer.
“She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director,” they explained. “To be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.”
Of course, the ‘Sony Fiasco’ refers to recent events surrounding the Sony hack… more specifically, leaked e-mails to Sony Pictures boss Amy Pascal in which producer Scott Rudin slated the 39-year-old actress.
Being called a “minimally talented spoiled brat” seems to have hit her pretty hard.
But will Marvel really fork over $20 million for Angelina to direct Captain Marvel?
Although Marvel’s upcoming Phase Three is packed full of enormous titles, it’s likely that Captain Marvel and Black Panther will come under scrutiny for entirely different reasons. It’s the company’s first real attempt to bring diversity to its flagship comic book titles… and that’s why Captain Marvel is so important to get right.
Even so, I can’t help thinking that Marvel is unlikely to resort to using a big name as a promotional tool. And appointing Angelina Jolie as director would be just that – bringing her on board for the purpose of getting the film noticed.
After all, with all eyes on Marvel’s more diverse efforts, the film really needs to stand on its own two feet.
Of course, there’s also the matter of experience. Although Angelina Jolie is a superstar in terms of acting ability, she’s relatively new to the director’s chair. Would Marvel really be so keen to throw $20 million at a director with only two films under her belt? I’m not so sure.
Either way, it looks as though Captain Marvel is going to be a key film for Marvel Studios. And whoever takes the director’s chair will be under a huge amount of pressure to get it right.
Will Angelina Jolie be the one who can guarantee that? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Captain Marvel heads to cinemas on 6 July 2018.
