It’s official – Batgirl is getting her own movie.
According to Variety, former Avengers Assemble director Joss Whedon will helm the upcoming debut of DC’s Batgirl… and it’s about time she headed to the big screen.
“Batgirl is flying solo,” they revealed. “The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon. Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.”
Of course, Joss Whedon is best known for directing Avengers Assemble as well as its sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron… not to mention the kick-ass female-led vampire series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
But now it seems he’s making the jump to DC.
Not that he’s been opposed to it before.
In fact, Joss Whedon has often speculated about directing a DC superhero movie… and when asked about it, he always confirmed that he would – if he could take on a female superhero.

Well, now it looks as though his wish has been granted.
Batgirl first appeared in print back in 1967 in Detective Comics #359. The Billion Dollar Debut Of Batgirl featured the newly-minted heroine facing off against Killer Moth after she believes the supervillain has attacked Bruce Wayne at Wayne Manor.
But who she’ll be facing in the film remains a mystery.
“Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroines in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.”
Does this mean we can expect a cameo from batman himself? I’d put money it… and I can’t help thinking we might even get a Batgirl cameo during the upcoming Batman solo film, The Batman.
After all, this new Batgirl project only originated in the last month or so – the same time frame that The Batman has been undergoing significant rewrites.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
