Batman may appear in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie… but will he clash with DC’s team of super villains?
According to Forbes reporter Mark Hughes, we’ll be seeing Ben Affleck’s Batman appear in Suicide Squad… and it’s got a lot to do with his arch nemesis.
“I’ve heard for weeks that Batman will appear in Suicide Squad, supposedly in an in-story scene, likely at the end of the film and focused on certain circumstances involving the Joker,” he said.
Of course, recent reports suggest that The Joker will spend the entire movie behind bars, only to spring an escape plan at the very end of the film.
It’s likely then that Forbes has heard that this involves Batman in some capacity… and if you ask me, it’s exactly the sort of thing DC needs to build a wider, inter-connected film universe.
Especially when you consider the next piece of info they drop…
“This would set up the Joker as a possible/likely antagonist in the solo Batman movie that’s planned in the next few years, and which I’ve heard will take some inspiration from Frank Miller’s comic book series The Dark Knight Returns.”
Now, despite DC’s recent full slate announcement, a solo Batman movie is something which seemed to be off the table. Batman V Superman leading into the Justice League meant that there was little room for a solo outing.
But that’s exactly what Forbes thinks that DC has up its sleeve.
Reportedly based on The Dark Knight Returns, this seems to fit in with rumours of the Joker’s escape – a plot point which is crucial to this seminal comic book work. Facing off against an escaped Joker is the order of the day… and would likely provide an excellent first outing for Ben Affleck.
Will it actually pan out like that? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it certainly sounds promising.
Suicide Squad heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
