It’s official – Batman V Superman has finally unveiled its first trailer… and it gives us a good look at the Dark Knight and Man of Steel as they go head-to-head.
It’s no secret that the Batman V Superman trailer has been under the spotlight recently, after it was leaked online earlier this week. Despite plans to unveil the trailer in cinemas across the USA, it soon ended up on YouTube… and quickly spread across the internet.
And now, Zack Snyder has responded by releasing the trailer in full.
Appearing on Twitter, the Batman V Superman director revealed the trailer for all to see… along with a little message aimed at those who leaked it earlier.
“Cell Phone v IMAX,” he added. “IMAX Event BvS fans will still be first & only to see special IMAX BvS teaser #AFewExtraShotsPlusALittleSwag #NotPirated”
But the trailer is what you’re really here for… and it’s a rather odd one.
Of course, we get our first proper glimpse at a stand-off between the two DC heavyweights. But it’s the rest of the trailer that gives us some rather disturbing imagery.
The tone of the film is, as we all expected, rather gritty. But while Man of Steel seemed determined to bring forth a heavy dose of gritty realism, Batman V Superman steps it up a notch. Instead, we get a much darker tone… and it looks as though the world has changed a hell of a lot since Superman’s arrival.
And that’s what much of the trailer is about.
Superman is forced under the spotlight, with a number of voiceovers explaining why he should be held accountable, why humans have a history of following those in power. And it seems one big question is being raised – should Superman interfere with humanity?
Most surprisingly, we find a military unit bowing to Superman… and then there’s the image of Ben Affleck in his armoured batsuit.
There’s certainly a lot to take in. But I can’t help feeling a bit underwhelmed.
Don’t get me wrong – it’s going to be an interesting movie. And we finally get to see Batman and Superman on screen together for the first time. But is this dystopian tone really right for the first ever meeting of these comic book titans?
I can’t help thinking that they’ve laid it on a bit thick.
Batman V Superman heads to cinemas on 25 March 2016.
