After a barrage of rumours linking Benedict Cumberbatch to the Star Wars VII trailer, it looks as though it’s not his voice… and he claims he doesn’t have a role in the film at all.
It’s been a long while since Benedict Cumberbatch was first rumoured for a role in the galaxy far, far away. And after much speculation linking him to numerous roles, it looked as though all that had died down. But with the release of the recent Star Wars VII trailer many of us – myself included – wondered if Cumberbatch voiced the trailer’s sinister narrator…
But it looks as though it’s actually not him at all…
Appearing at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, the 38-year-old British actor confirmed that it’s not his voice in the Star Wars trailer… and stated that he doesn’t have a role in the film at all.
“Yeah, I can put that one to bed can’t I?” he said after turning to his publicist. “I mean, I am not the voice of the Star Wars trailer, nor am I the hooded character with the rather cool new lightsaber, so… no. No, no.”
Of course, the real identity of the mysterious Star Wars narrator has been discussed to death over the last few days… and after a number of media outlets claimed to have been told who it really is, it looks as though we can lay that discussion to rest.
“That is Andy Serkis you hear in the trailer,” said Drew McWeeny of HitFix. “I was able to verify this, although I was not able to uncover any further information about the role he plays. Here’s what I do know, though. He’s playing a pivotal role in the film, although he will not have a lot of screen time.”
And while it looked as though this may have to remain a rumour for the time being, it didn’t take long for Serkis himself to seemingly confirm his appearance. During an interview with the BBC World Service, the conversation quickly turned towards his role in Star Wars VII.
“I can tell you absolutely nothing,” he said. “We’re all sworn to secrecy to a major, major degree… but you might garner something if you listen to the trailer. And watch it of course.”
Andy Serkis was confirmed to star in the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens ever since those rather awesome initial casting announcements. And while we had no idea what role he might take in the galaxy far, far away, it looks as though we may have been given our first hint.
But was Benedict Cumberbatch telling us the truth when he refuted his Star Wars VII role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
