Bill and Ted 3 is still on the cards… and we’ve finally got some details.
It’s been over twenty years since we last saw the Wyld Stallyns take to our screens in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey… and it seems we can expect more time-travelling antics in the upcoming sequel.
In an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK, the 49-year-old writer and director opened up about what we should expect from the bodacious Bill and Ted sequel.
“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up,” he explained. “It’s really sweet and really f**king funny. But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot.”
That’s certainly a bit of a relief – after all, Hollywood has a tendency to go reboot crazy these days. And I can’t help thinking this is one franchise where we really don’t want to see anyone else take over those iconic roles.
“The conceit is really funny,” he added. “What if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”
Of course, fans of the original movies will remember Bill S. Preston and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan’s wild adventure through time, meeting all manner of historical figures from Napoleon to Billy the Kid and even Grrek philosopher, Socrates. And while there’s still no concrete news when it comes to the film’s plot, it sounds as though we can expect more time-travelling hijinx.
“There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie,” he added… and it sounds as though Rufus’ time-travelling phone box might have something to do with it. “[It’s] answering the question: ‘What happened to these guys?’ They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”
But when will the sequel appear in cinemas? If you were expecting an impending release, I wouldn’t hold your breath…
“The thing we had going against us is that word got out,” he explained. “That was kind of a bummer. It just takes a long time to put a movie together. Now we’re having to build this thing in public, which is fine. I just feel bad [the fans] have to get dragged through this long, boring, protracted process.”
It certainly sounds as though there’s still a long way to go… and for now, we don’t even know if the script has even been completed. Still, the fact that there’s an idea out there for another Bill and Ted sequel is most excellent.
And we can’t wait to find out what they’ve been up to for the last twenty-odd years. My guess? Partying hard.
