It’s that time of year when Christmas is just around the corner and the yuletide specials are out in force… but if Christmas cheer is what you’re after, you might want to stay away from Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror.
The critically-acclaimed series will return this December for a Christmas Special… but don’t expect to feel good will amongst men… after all, this is from the mind that showed you the Prime Minister having sex with a pig.
“The 90-minute seasonal special may well be the most mind-bending episode yet, showcasing three interwoven stories of Yuletide techno-paranoia,” they explained. “It will start filming in the UK this week.”
The feature-length special is set to star Jon Hamm, Oona Chaplin and Rafe Spall… and while little is known about the plot of the presumably-dark Christmas special, it looks as though Jon Hamm will star in all three individual stories, weaving them together into what’s described as an ‘unsettling’ whole.
“I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Black Mirror Christmas Special,” said Jon Hamm. “I have been a massive fan of the show since its inception. Its dark humour and intelligent observation of our society and values hooked me deeply as a viewer and I’m honoured that Charlie and the rest of the creative team have asked me to participate in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.”
And it looks as though Brooker himself is just as happy to have such a great cast to work with.
“I’m revoltingly happy that Jon, Rafe and Oona are participating in the horrible pageant that is Black Mirror. As far as I’m concerned their presence is a huge Christmas present that’s arrived early.”
I have to admit, I absolutely love Black Mirror. Its commentary on the unsettling nature of the modern, digital age is a sharp note that really sticks with you. But will Black Mirror be a popular addition to the Christmas broadcasting schedule?
For fans of the show, it’s no doubt an extra little stocking-filler. But will the general public find it quite so palatable? I suppose it depends what Brooker has in mind…
