It looks as though the first Star Wars spin-off film could take us back to the time of the original trilogy… as a new rumour suggests an impressive plot for the upcoming movie.
According to Slashfilm the first Star Wars spin-off takes us back to before the Battle of Yavin… to a time when the Rebels were still struggling to get their hands on the infamous Death Star plans.
“We’ve heard the 2016 Star Wars spin-off movie is about the group of people which are out to pull off the ultimate heist in a galaxy far, far away,” they explain. “What the group is trying to steal is one of the most important linchpins in Star Wars history — they are out to steal the plans for the first Death Star.”
Now, is it just me or does this sound incredibly cool? Obviously, this is just a rumour… at least, for now. But with the upcoming Star Wars spin-offs rumoured to dabble in different styles and genres, it’s exactly the kind of story that would work well.
But while the destruction of the Death Star is a colossal victory for the Rebellion, it looks as though it’s not the rebels themselves who get their hands on the Death Star data. Just leave it to your friendly local bounty hunter.

“That’s right, the story is set during the A New Hope era. However, it’s not the Rebel Alliance as we’d all assumed,” they added. “As rumor has it, the story follows a group of bounty hunters who were hired for the job — think the Seven Samurai or Suicide Squad meets Ocean’s Eleven in the world of Star Wars.”
How’s that for a cool setup?
Of course, we’ve heard Boba Fett linked to his own Star Wars spin-off for some time… but I can’t help thinking this is exactly the kind of film he might appear in. After all, he’s known to frequent the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars universe, and we always assumed he is ever the consummate professional when it comes to his bounties. And that means switching allegiances as quick as he makes them.
But could he appear in this rumoured spin-off?
“Fett was never mentioned in any of the conversations we had about this film,” they explain. “But if this is a movie about bounty hunters, you could easily include him. I repeat: we do not know if Boba Fett is in this film. We just think the idea of the Rebels hiring a bunch of bounty hunters, who don’t have a real allegiance, is a logical and cool plot.”
I have to agree, it’s an incredibly cool idea… and more importantly, it just makes a lot of sense. After all, the Rebel Alliance doesn’t have the infinite resources of the Empire. If they did, they wouldn’t have such a rugged, beat-up looking armada. And with limited resources, they might just turn to a bunch of mercenaries to get the job done.
Of course, there’s also the small matter of who might lead this rag-tag band of bounty hunters… and while I’m tempted to put Boba Fett in charge, it looks as though there might be someone else in mind.
“Another piece of the rumor we heard is the main character of this film would be introduced in The Force Awakens,” they reveal. “If that’s the case, they would have to be much older in that the new film. Maybe in their 60s to 80s.”
It’s not a huge leap from there to see Max Von Sydow fitting the bill. And I have to admit, since I first heard that he was attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I couldn’t help wondering whether he’d link us back to the time of the original movies.
But could it be even more than that?
We still have no idea which characters any of the new cast members will be playing. And perhaps that’s because it would tell us too much. Could Max Von Sydow portray an older Boba Fett? Will he be introduced in The Force Awakens as an ally or mentor to the new, younger characters?
Either way, it looks as though the upcoming Star Wars spin-off could be one of the coolest spin-off films ever made. And let’s face it – it’s an excellent way of expanding upon the story of the original trilogy without messing up the existing storylines.
But will director Gareth Edwards attempt to recapture the visual style and tone of the original movies?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but the recent practical effects of J.J. Abrams in Star Wars VII certainly gives me A New Hope.
