It’s official – Captain America 3 will see Iron Man and Tony Stark go head-to-head… as Marvel unveils Captain America: Civil War.
It’s the comic book event that Marvel fans have been hoping for – Civil War is being brought to the big screen. Captain America: Civil War was announced during a special live event at El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles… and marks the beginning of Marvel’s Phase Three. But what can we expect from this awesome title?
“It’ll be hero vs. hero as Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War erupts onto the big screen!”
But what does that mean for the Marvel universe?
It’s likely that Civil War will follow the comic book series of the same name. And that means all-out war between Marvel’s greatest heroes.
Following rising tensions amongst the US government, superheroes are forced to register their secret identities. And let’s just say that some heroes don’t want to give up their double lives. Unfortunately, Iron Man and Captain America fall on different sides of the debate, with Tony Stark supporting registration while Steve Rogers leads the anti-registration side.
In the end, it’s a gut-wrenching storyling that pits Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against one another… and that’s likely what we’ll see on the big screen. At least, to some degree.
“This is heartbreaking for me,” said Chris Evans. After all, he and Robert Downey Jr. have worked side by side throughout the two Avengers movies and beyond. But with a new clip from Age of Ultron, it’s clear that something isn’t right between them.
“Cap and Tony are talking about the Maximoff kids while chopping wood,” said Marvel rep Patrick Cavanaugh. “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes…pulled apart like cotton candy.”
Pulled apart like cotton candy? It sounds as though The Avengers are really going through the mill… but quite what happens to them remains to be seen. But I get the feeling that it’s going to push Captain America’s loyalties to breaking point. And this could be what starts the entire Civil War. After all, it’s one of Tony Stark’s creations that’s done all this.
But is there a bit more to it?
“Events of the whole cinematic universe will make all governments in the world want regulation,” explained Kevin Feige. “Not so much about secret identity, but about who reports to who.”
Of course, we’ve seen mistrust spreading for some time throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe… most prominently with the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But with S.H.I.E.L.D’s collapse and the Avengers on the brink, which characters will take up arms in the Civil War?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but with Black Panther confirmed to appear, it looks as though this is just the beginning of an all-star superhero roster.
