Marvel directors Anthony and Joe Russo have signed for Sony Pictures after a successful stint with Captain America. But will they be working on the new Spider-Man movie?
According to The Wrap, the Marvel directors have signed a first look deal with rival studio Sony Pictures… but that may not be such a bad thing.
“Joe and Anthony Russo have entered into a three-year first-look deal for feature films with Sony Pictures Entertainment,” they said. “The news comes after Marvel and Sony announced a partnership that would introduce a new Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before headlining his own solo film.”
Of course, while there’s no official word on what they’ll be working on, the speculation here is that Marvel’s recent Spider-Man deal with Sony Pictures may come into play. After all, the directing duo have already had great success with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are poised to begin with Marvel’s flagship movie, Civil War – likely another smash hit.
Who better to take on the upcoming Spider-Man collaboration?
Unfortunately, details remain unclear about exactly what they’re working on… and that likely won’t be revealed to the public for some time. but it certainly sounds as though they may be involved in the upcoming Spider-Man franchise.
And might even be brought on board for the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
“Most recently, Drew Goddard was said to be directing,” they explained, “though insiders later cautioned, ‘Drew has not yet met with Marvel but will soon; along with several others’.”
Could the Russo Brothers be among them?
“The Russos are directing Captain America: Civil War, where the new Spidey is expected to make his first appearance before his own film is released in 2017,” they explain. And if it’s really going to be Spider-Man’s first Marvel appearance, that could be reason enough to get the Russo Brothers over to Sony.
“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” said the directing duo. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”
Of course, whether they end up working on the new Spider-Man movie remains to be seen. But I can’t help thinking they’re exactly the right guys for the job.
The all-new Spider-Man movie heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
