After melting our hearts with the first trailer for Chappie, the second gives us a more action-packed look at Neill Blomkamp’s thinking, feeling robot.
It’s no secret that Chappie is one of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of 2015. And after the likes of District 9 and Elysium, Blomkamp has earned his place amongst sci-fi greats. But while Chappie may have looked like an homage to the 1980’s hit Short Circuit, the new trailer makes it look a lot more like Robocop.
And I can’t help thinking it’s the mash-up we’ve all been waiting for.
Shining a spotlight on Hugh Jackman’s embittered military contractor, it looks as though Chappie will be going up against an ED-209-inspired foe as the company that helped create him seeks to bring him down.
Fearful of the evolving nature of poor old Chappie, Sigourney Weaver plays an executive of the company that created the world’s first robotic police force… and she’s not exactly happy with Chappie’s progress.
“A thinking robot could be the end of mankind,” she proclaims. “Destroy that robot. Burn it to ash.”
Thankfully, it seems Chappie has some allies in the form of his creator and the South African street gangs who have apparently stolen him away. But is that enough to fight off the threat of a tank-like robotic foe?
Chappie stars Sharlto Copley as the titular robotic hero as well as Hugh Jackman as Vincent Moore and Dev Patel as Deon Wilson. Sigourney Weaver also stars alongside Yolandi Visser and Watkin Tudor Jones.
Of course, the ‘80s references and similarities between earlier A.I. films are no accident… and it’s clear that Blomkamp is making the classic story his own. Perhaps calling it a mash-up between Short Circuit and Robocop is over-simplifying things.
But one thing’s for certain – Chappie is going to take the world by storm.
