After plenty of speculation, it looks as though the new Ghostbusters movie is getting an all-female cast… which will be directed by comedy director, Paul Feig.
It’s perhaps one of the controversial film-making decisions in recent years – despite trying to get a Ghostbusters sequel off the ground for a number of years, the studio has instead opted for a complete reboot, featuring an all-female cast.
And after commercial success with the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat it looks as though Paul Feig will be directing.
“It’s official,” he tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. “I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.”
Of course, The Hollywood Reporter announced Katie Dippold’s involvement earlier that day – a writer who has already worked alongside Paul Feig on his recent comedy ‘The Heat’. But is she really cut out for the job?
If you ask me, it’s a bit of an odd situation.
For one thing, Dan Aykroyd has been attempting to get a sequel off the ground many years… a film which was originally intended to bring the original Ghostbusters back onto our screens, but which eventually shifted focus towards a new generation.
But after the death of Harold Ramis and the exit of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, it looks as though the studio has instead decided to approach a complete reboot of the franchise. Judging from their choice of writer and director, they’ll be taking it in a very different direction.
Obviously, fans of Paul Feig’s earlier films are expecting Melissa McCarthy to appear in some form or another… and I can’t help thinking she’ll probably end up taking a starring role. After all, she’s already proved to be a smash hit when it comes to female-led comedies.
But is this really the approach a third Ghostbusters movie needs?
Honestly, I can’t help thinking it’s just all wrong. It feels like a wholly cynical move by the studio to cash in on a franchise, despite what the original fans might think. Will the new film be any good? Sure, it might do well… but it certainly isn’t Ghostbusters to me.
