Although Hicks met an unfortunate end in Alien 3 it looks as though he could return in Neill Blomkamp’s Alien sequel. But will Michael Biehn return?
According to Digital Spy, Michael Biehn will return in the upcoming Alien sequel… but when asked whether Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn would be back, Neill Blomkamp gave a rather cryptic answer.
“Hopefully we’ll see them,” he said. Not quite the cast-iron confirmation we were hoping for.
Of course, it’s not surprising that he was asked about Michael Biehn – after all, Corporal Hicks featured prominently in Neill Blomkamp’s recently unveiled concept art. And for most fans, it would be a welcome return.
But is it really possible?
It’s no secret that Alien 3 saw the death of Hicks in some of its opening moments, when Ripley turned out to be the only survivor of the Sulaco pod crash. But judging from earlier comments by Blomkamp himself, it might not be such an issue.
“I want it to be the third of those three movies,” he said, talking about the first two ‘Alien’ films. “I’m going to try my best to try to make it live up to those two.”
Obviously, Blomkamp’s comments about the Alien franchise are unclear at this point… as is the general premise of his movie. Will it sit between the events of Aliens and Alien 3 or will it be more of a successor film?
Either way, it looks as though he’s heavily influenced by the first two films.
“The most appealing elements to me… they’re both my favourite film… but the thing about making a film in that world, that is so appealing to me, is the idea that your job as the director becomes the job of Freudian terror.”
“You’re trying to go down dark passageways with the chance of something coming around the corner and terrorising us on some primal, Neolithic caveman getting hunted by a lion level,” he added. “That’s my goal and that’s just an appealing goal. Cameron did it with more aliens and more guns, Ridley did it with slow-burning, unbelievable tension, so I’m excited.”
It certainly sounds as though Blomkamp has a plan… and judging from that impressive concept art, it’s going to be one hell of a sci-fi sequel. And let’s face it – if Sigourney Weaver is excited, then it has to be a good idea.
“Of course, we’ve talked about it since I got off the set of Chappie,” she said. “Almost immediately. I can’t think of a better director to take this on. He loves these movies, he understands them, he knows what the fans want, he’s such a great storyteller, he has such great instincts and he trusts his instincts so… it couldn’t be in better hands. I’m delighted for the series and for Ripley, who won’t have to be hanging around in space for the rest of eternity.”
But will Michael Biehn return to the role of Hicks? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
