It looks as though The Crow remake is finally shifting gear into production… and the long-awaited horror reboot will start filming by Spring 2015.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming remake of 1994’s The Crow is due to begin filming next year… but who will take Brandon Lee’s title role?
“Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the Abu Dhabi Film Festival’s opening night, [Ed] Pressman — who was also behind the 1994 original — said that he hoped production on the reboot of the cult horror flick would begin ‘in the spring’.”
Describing the titular character as ‘the anti-Spider-Man’, Pressman explained that while the original movie still has a loyal fan base, they’re actually reaching out to a new generation.
“It still has a big fan base even though it was so long ago,” he said. “But the generation today doesn’t even know The Crow.”
According to Pressman, the remake will bring a lot of new material to the table, “bringing to the screen a lot of parts of the story that were never really told.”
But does The Crow really need a remake?
Based on the popular cult graphic novel, the titular character is an undead vigilante, brought back to life by a supernatural crow to avenge his girlfriend’s (and his own) death. But is there really enough new material to warrant a reboot?
If you ask me, it looks as though the studio is merely attempting to revitalise a once-promising franchise… and with the death of Brandon Lee, it seems they’re forced to look elsewhere when bringing The Crow to the big screen.
Will it be as good as the original? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I don’t hold out much hope.
