Cockney geezer Danny Dyer admits that he’s auditioned for Game of Thrones three times… but still hasn’t landed a role.
It’s no secret that Game of Thrones is one of the biggest shows on TV. And it’s no doubt every actor’s dream to land a part on the show. It’s certainly jam-packed with British talent, including the likes of Sean Bean and Charles Dance.
But could Danny Dyer ever end up in Westeros?
During an interview with Jonathon Ross, the 37-year-old Eastenders actor revealed he’s auditioned for Game of Thrones three times… and never once landed a role.
“I’ve been up for it three times, I got three knockbacks,” he said. And it looks as though he really, really wants a part. Of course, fellow guest Dame Diana Rigg might just be able to help him out. After all, she plays Lady Olenna Tyrell in the hit Fantasy series.
But he might want to do something about that accent.
“I’ll put in a word for you as long as you lose the cockney accent,” she said. But since it has become the actor’s calling card, that might be a bit difficult.
Still, Dyer has auditioned for several roles on the show and doesn’t seem to be giving up just yet. “One was Pyper,” he explained. “Is it Pyper? There’s a couple of cockneys knocking about. There’s a couple of chimney sweeps too. I’ve seen them.”
Of course, Pyper is played by the London-born actor, Josef Altin… so it’s clear that other Londoners have managed to get a role. But not Danny Dyer.
Still, he remains rather ambitious and doesn’t seem to think that his cockney accent is an issue. After all, he recently spoke about bringing a cockney twist to some of our favourite TV characters.
“I think that I could play Sherlock… if I did it my way,” he said. “Benedict [Cumberbatch] is brilliant and the lines roll off his tongue, but that role is about being highly intelligent rather than posh.”
Can’t help thinking you may have made our point for us there, Danny.
“I think I could do Doctor Who as well,” he added.
Unless the good Doctor becomes a cockney geezer in his next regeneration, I wouldn’t count on it anytime soon. Still, you have to admire his ambition. The bleedin’ mug.
