It’s official – Deadpool is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time…

It’s no secret that Ryan Reynolds has ushered Deadpool towards a phenomenal box office success… and the film has been lauded by critics and fans alike. But now it looks as though the irreverent superhero movie has clinched a rather cool title.

It’s the highest-grossing R-rated flick ever made.

Ben Affleck Has Written A Batman Script

According to movie metrics site Box Office Mojo, the recent Deadpool movie has racked up a colossal £522 million at the global box office… and that puts it firmly ahead of all other R-rated movies that have ever been made.

Impressively, this means it overtook the former champion, The Matrix Reloaded.

And that movie held the R-rated box office title for over a decade.

Of course, the huge Deadpool box office figures are even more surprising when you consider that the film was banned in China – one of cinemas larger global markets. But it still managed to amass a colossal sum despite this obvious setback.

But could this mean a new wave of more adult-themed comic book movies?

It’s certainly possible… and we’ve already seen reports that the recently-released ‘Batman V Superman’ will be getting an extended, R-rated Blu-ray release.

Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder denies rumours that Deadpool gave rise to this R-rated cut – stating that they didn’t just go out and film a bunch of new material.

But I can’t help thinking that the success of Deadpool may have been just what they needed for this previously-cut footage to see the light of day.

Either way, it looks as though comic book movies may be getting a little more adult… and I can’t help thinking we owe it all to the Merc with a Mouth.

Deadpool appeared in cinemas on 10 February 2016.

Do you think Deadpool will spawn even more R-rated comic book movies? Could this be what we really need? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
