Diego Luna Nabs Role In Star Wars: Rogue One

Star Wars spin-off adds Mexican actor Diego Luna.

14th May 2015 by Ryan Leston

Star Wars

Diego Luna is about to head to the galaxy far, far away as he joins the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One.

According to Variety the 35-year-old Mexican actor is in talks for a leading role in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off. And they even have some details about who Ben Mendelsohn might be playing…

“Director Gareth Edwards has found another rebel fighter to battle the Empire in Star Wars: Rogue One,” they revealed. “Diego Luna is in talks for a lead role alongside Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed, with Ben Mendelsohn set to star as the film’s primary villain.”

“Disney and Lucasfilm had no comment on the casting.”

Of course, there’s currently no indication as to who Diego Luna might be playing… and it’s likely to remain that way for some time. But while character details remain under wraps, it’s likely that Luna will be joining the Rebellion.

Set some time before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, the upcoming anthology film ‘Rogue One’ follows the Rebel Alliance’s efforts to steal the plans for the first Death Star. Described as more of a war film than other instalments, the cast is expected to be a large ensemble similar to The Dirty Dozen or Saving Private Ryan.

And that means we’re none the wiser about Luna’s role.

But what’s all this about Ben Mendelsohn playing the movie’s villain?

It was rumoured a couple of months ago that Mendelsohn had landed the role… but nothing has been heard about it since. Even at the time, there was no indication as to who he might be playing.

But now it looks as though he’s fallen on the side of the Empire.

Will he go face-to-face with leading lady Felicity Jones? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But Star Wars: Rogue One is already shaping up to be a rather interesting first spin-off.

Star Wars: Rogue One heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.

Who do you think Diego Luna will play? Will Ben Mendelsohn be a fearsome Imperial officer, or something else entirely? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
