After Joaquin Phoenix left talks to appear in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, the heat is on to find a suitable Sorcerer Supreme… and it could end up being none other than Ewan McGregor.
According to Badass Digest, the 43-year-old Scottish actor has been linked to Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movie… but is he really the right man for the job?
“A new source contacted me and said that Ewan McGregor had been prepping for the role,” they revealed. “[He’s] doing the usual research actors do when looking at taking on an adaptation or existing character. I contacted one of my usual sources and asked if this was true, and I was told ‘They’re looking at him’.”
Of course, the fact that Marvel is ‘looking’ at Ewan McGregor is far from a cast-iron casting confirmation. But while we’re still dealing with rather vague terms when it comes to Doctor Strange it looks as though we may be nearing a final decision.
After all, with a director in place and an official release date, they really do need to get cracking.
And let’s face it – Ewan McGregor might not be at the top of every fan’s dream casting list, but he certainly fits the bill. After pursuing Joaquin Phoenix for the role, it’s clear that Marvel is keen to cast a middle-aged Doctor Strange… and at 43 (with an already screen-tested beard) McGregor really isn’t the worst possible choice.
But I’m not entirely convinced, either.
Thankfully, it looks as though Marvel isn’t solely pursuing McGregor… as Variety reveals what they believe to be Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ shortlist.
Including Jared Leto, Oscar Isaac, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke, it looks as though there are some incredible actors being linked to the role. And if you ask me, Ethan Hawke should be the one Marvel really pushes for.
But who will eventually land the coveted role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
