The Fantastic Four reboot has been given an official synopsis…
And I have to admit, it sounds a lot more thrilling than I’d expected.
After news that the Fantastic Four franchise would be rebooted, there’s been plenty of interest in this new direction. After all, with Josh Trank at the helm, it looks as though the upcoming reboot will head in a very different direction. But while numerous leaks have suggested snippets of plot, it looks as though we finally get our first official hint at what the new Fantastic Four will have to deal with…
This seemingly-official synopsis appeared online at Rotten Tomatoes… and while it seems like a very familiar setup, there’s one thing that certainly stands out.
“THE FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.”
Of course, these four outsiders are the traditional Fantastic Four – consisting of Mr Fantastic (Miles Teller), The Invisible Woman (Kate Mara), The Human Torch (Michael B Jordan), and The Thing (Jamie Bell). And I think it’s safe to say that the main villain of the piece will be the unmistakable Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell).
“Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.”
Obviously, the glaring difference with this new synopsis is the origin of The Fantastic Four’s powers. And where traditionally they become exposed to Cosmic Rays, it looks as though the new team gain their powers due to some sort of inter-dimensional shift.
Why does this matter? Well, the thought of deviating into uncharted territories has proved to be a divisive move amongst comic book fans. And while it looks as though the core dynamic of the comic books will remain, this key difference might be too much for some fans.
Also, rather curiously it looks as though this new synopsis lists Jeremy Slater as the sole screenwriter for the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot. A move which seemingly takes Simon Kinberg – the creative driving force behind 20th Century Fox’s comic book properties – out of the driving seat.
But while this new synopsis gives us a brief look at the upcoming reboot, when will finally get our first glimpse at the guys in costume? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
But with both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman V Superman giving us some official images, it looks as though Fox is already having to play catch-up.
The Fantastic Four is expected in cinemas from 6 August 2015.
