Although Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four is far grittier than earlier films, it looks as though there might still be room for some laughs.
In an interview with MTV News, Miles Teller – the new Mr Fantastic – revealed that the Marvel comic book movie will still have some comedic moments… despite the darker tone.
“You should have some laughs in there,” he said. “You want to see some enjoyment and The Thing better say ‘It’s clobbering time’… I’m sure there’s some humorous elements to it. But Josh – his tone is not ‘Avengers’ for sure.”
Obviously, the upcoming Fantastic Four movie is a very different kind of superhero film… especially compared to earlier adaptations of the same comic books. And that’s definitely no accident.
Let’s face it – the previous Fantastic Four films were a lot cheesier than modern comic book movies – even the recent adaptations starring Ioan Gruffudd. It’s certainly something that Fox is going to be keen to keep at bay in the upcoming reboot. And while we can expect some humour, I get the feeling it’s still going to be a very different kind of film.
And that’s all down to director, Josh Trank.
Known for the impressive Chronicle, it’s his gritty, found-footage style that many were expecting for the Fantastic Four reboot. But while we’re not in found-footage territory, it looks as though we can still expect a similar visual style to his earlier work. And that’s a very good thing.
But will Fantastic Four take much inspiration from the comic books?
“I tried to educate myself on as much as I could,” said Teller. “We’re leaning more towards an origin story – the Ultimate Fantastic Four is something I was looking at. But yea, we were actually told to not necessarily ingest everything.”

Of course, it’s long been rumoured that the Ultimate version of the Fantastic Four would prove to be the basis for the upcoming movie. And while the recent trailer shows more than a similarity between the two groups’ origins, it seems we might not be getting those iconic blue suits.
And Miles Teller explains that the film is trying to do things a little differently.
“We were looking to kind of put our stamp on it,” he added. “And obviously we’re paying respect to the history of the characters and everything, but at the same time bring them up to date and to humanise them in a way that hasn’t been done.”
But will this newly rebooted Fantastic Four prove to be better than its predecessors? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it looks pretty promising so far.
