It’s official – Aquaman is going to be badass.
Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder has unveiled the first official image of Jason Momoa in his Aquaman costume… and it’s far better than we imagined.
The following image was shared on Twitter by director Zack Snyder… and it gives us our first glimpse at Jason Momoa as Aquaman. As well as possibly confirming his appearance in the upcoming superhero clash, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This fairly straight-forward image shows Momoa wielding his soon-to-be-famous trident, while sporting some rather impressive, almost gladiatorial armoured braces. And the full body tattoos certainly give Aquaman a certain tribal look.
And then there’s the wording: “Unite The Seven”.
Clearly a play on uniting the seven seas, could this be a hint that we’ll see a seven-man line-up for the Justice League? We already know that Batman, Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman will appear on screen together… but does this leave only three spaces open on the team roster for everybody else?
A quick glance over DC’s upcoming film slate shows The Flash, Cyborg and Green Lantern getting their own solo films… could these be our final three?
Of course, Zack Snyder also posted the above image along with the phrase, “There is only one true king.” Could this be a hint towards the events of the eventual Aquaman solo movie? It certainly sounds as though an Atlantean civil war might be brewing.
But let’s get back to that costume…
Although many fans will likely deride the image for not being like the comic books, it’s actually a rather impressive take on one of Aquaman’s grittier comic book costumes. And if you look closely at his armour and trousers, you can just about make out the dulled colours that give us a more muted take on the hero’s traditional colour scheme.
There’s even a subtle hint at the traditional character’s blond hair…
All in all, this image gives us a lot more to think about than we first thought… and I can’t help thinking that Jason Momoa is going to own this role. The new costume is fantastic, even if he does look a bit like a trident-wielding version of his character from Game of Thrones.
Let’s just hope they don’t spoil the look with any bright pink seahorses…
Aquaman heads to cinemas on 27 July 2018.
