Josh Trank unveils some cool new pictures from The Fantastic Four. And it’s our first look at his vision for the classic Marvel superhero group.
When it comes to the Fantastic Four reboot, it’s been all quiet on the western front. We’ve heard plenty of rumours about Josh Trank’s take on these classic Marvel heroes, but nothing concrete. And while it seems that 20th Century Fox wants it to stay that way, we’ve finally been given our first look at the upcoming film.
And the first trailer is just around the corner…
Along with an interview with Collider, Josh Trank has revealed this first look at the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot… and answers some burning questions.
“We’ve consciously decided to not release anything official,” he said. “This isn’t like The Avengers. Even when the first Avengers came out, there were four other movies that people were familiar with. The suits and the tone and the look and the feel… But this movie, we really want the audience to have the proper reaction to this material seeing it for the first time. You’ve really got to put your best foot forward. You can’t just leak an image to strike up a conversation. You want people to see something that has thought behind it. And the teaser should do just that.”
Although the image of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm shows off a new costume, it’s revealed that this is one of several to appear in the film and is used to help contain Johnny’s powers.
And by the end of the movie, they’ll don something closer to those classic blue suits.
Of course, the upcoming teaser trailer is reportedly due sometime tomorrow… and should give us our first real look at the tone and feel of Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot. But he also gave a hint about what we can expect.
“I would say that the science fiction of it is a big thing that sets it apart from most of the other superhero genre films,” he said. “I’m a huge David Cronenberg fan, and I always viewed Fantastic Four and the kind of weirdness that happens to these characters and how they’re transformed to really fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and transforming out of control.”
Describing the film as a ‘hard sci-fi’ take on the comic books, it looks as though we can expect a more grounded approach, similar to Trank’s recent film, Chronicle. And it looks as though the film’s comic book inspirations line up with that.
“I think The Ultimates is probably our biggest influence because it’s the younger Fantastic Four,” said writer Simon Kinberg. “And a lot of the science specifics are there. And a lot of the means of transformation we took from those books. As you’ll see a little bit in the trailer and a lot in the movie, there are influences really from the beginning of what Kirby and Stan were doing in the 60’s all the way up into the present day… This is an origin story in many regards and it is inspired by The Ultimate Fantastic Four as much as anything else.”
It certainly looks as though a lot of thought has gone into this film… and while rumours suggested that there’s been trouble brewing on the rather secretive production, it looks as though it couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Will The Fantastic Four be as good as we hope? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
But I can’t help feeling a lot more positive. Let’s just hope the upcoming teaser trailer really delivers.
The Fantastic Four heads to cinemas on 6 August 2016.
