It’s perhaps one of the most ridiculously named sequels of all time… Terminator Genisys finally gives us a first look at its new stars. But if you were expecting a plot that makes sense, you’ll be sadly mistaken…
It’s bad enough that Terminator Genisys has been given that ridiculous new name. But now in a bid to piss off sci-fi fans across the globe, it looks as though the time-travelling antics of John Connor will take him back to his mother’s past… and that’s where it all gets a bit tricky.
Appearing on the front of the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly, these cool new images give us a first look at Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese in the upcoming Terminator Genisys.
And it looks as though it might have been a particularly sunny photo shoot… what with all that squinting. Joined by Matt Smith in an unknown role and Jason Clarke as a disfigured John Connor, it’s our first look at the cast of this surely-mediocre Terminator sequel.
And the plot details they reveal aren’t exactly sounding too positive.
“Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role,” explains EW. “Nor is she Hamilton’s steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991’s T2.”
Instead, it looks as though Sarah Connor was orphaned by a Terminator at the age of nine… a fact that completely messes with the timeline of all the previous films.
“Since then, she’s been raised by Schwarzenegger’s Terminator – an older T-800 she calls ‘Pops’ who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.”
Hang on a minute… so she’s been raised by an ageing Terminator? Wouldn’t that mean that she’d recognise the T-800 in the original movie? It’s a mind-being plot that just doesn’t make any sense. And while they’re likely to spin it as a trauma victim choosing not to remember, I can’t help thinking this is a step too far.
And a rather cynical excuse just to get Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the franchise.
“Since she was 9 years old, she has been told everything that was supposed to happen,” says producer David Ellison. “But Sarah fundamentally rejects that destiny. She says, ‘That’s not what I want to do.’ It’s her decision that drives the story in a very different direction.”
Yea.. a direction that happens to be firmly away from the timeline of the original films. As a fan of Terminator and T2 I can’t help thinking this just messes with the franchise. But will it manage to capture the essence of the originals? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I’m not holding out much hope.
