It’s official – Tomb Raider looks awesome.
And so does Alicia Vikander as the legendary Lara Croft.
It’s no secret that Tomb Raider is getting rebooted… and with Alicia Vikander as everyone’s favourite archaeologist-turned-adventurer, it looks as though we’re in for a real treat. Now, thanks to Vanity Fair, we have our first official look at Vikander as the legendary video game character.
And let’s be honest – she really looks the part.
Based on the 2013 video game reboot, the upcoming Tomb Raider movie is clearly heading in a very different direction to its predecessors, which starred Angeline Jolie as Lara Croft.
Depicting a much younger Lara, the movie is far grittier than previous films.
And it looks as though the Tomb Raider movie will be taking quite a few cues from the rebooted video game. After all, Lara’s rugged, beaten-up, survivalistic look makes far more sense in the context of this storyline than any of her previous looks.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who – against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit – must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”
Sure, it’s pretty vague, but it sounds a lot like the setup to the 2013 video game.
And with familiar character names cropping up, it sounds like a pretty faithful adaptation.
“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited – Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,“ Vikander told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women.”
“She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits – tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”
But will she make a good Lara Croft?
Well, we haven’t seen her in action yet… and with a film like Tomb Raider, it all hinges on how well she can handle those big set pieces. But for the time being, Alicia Vikander really looks the part. And with her makeshift spear and acting chops, I get the feeling she’s really going to nail this.
Of course, for now we have to wait and see…
But if she’s half as good as she was in Ex Machina, it could be very special indeed.
Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft, alongside Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Alexandre Willaume, and Daniel Wu.
Roar Uthang directed the film based on a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
Tomb Raider heads to cinemas on 16 March 2018.
