Suicide Squad is really kicking off in Toronto… as Will Smith appears on set as Deadshot.
Over the past few days, we’ve seen Suicide Squad really stepping up production, with the likes of Jared Leto heading to the set. We’ve even seen the upcoming batman – Ben Affleck – head out on location. But what about the Squad themselves?
It seems we’ve finally got our first look at Deadshot… but he’s not what we were expecting.
Thanks to the folks at Just Jared, the legendary Will Smith has been snapped in costume on the set of Suicide Squad. But he doesn’t exactly look intimidating…
Sporting a red leather trench coat and a rather awesome pimping hat, the legendary mercenary is looking a bit… bling. And as he carries those shopping bags – presumably for his family – he’s not quite the cold-blooded mercenary we may have thought.
But perhaps that’s the point.
Presumably the lead character in Suicide Squad, the audience has to be rooting for him, even if he is one of DC’s infamous villains. And I can’t help wondering if what we’re seeing here is some kind of flashback – to a better time.
Either that, or we’re looking at a ‘man on the edge’ kind of scenario, with Deadshot going off the rails after his wife maxes out the family credit cards…
In all seriousness, it looks as though Deadshot is going to be given a more domesticated side – however it’s presented on screen. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s gone soft.
For one thing, it looks as though Will Smith’s version of the character will be a member of The Illuminati – a shadowy secret society which aims to take control of the world via subtle manipulation. And the most prominent DC character in that society is Vandal Savage.
Does this mean we can expect to see the iconic DC villain in Suicide Squad or is this just a subtle nod to the comic books?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But Will Smith’s civvies may have given away more than we thought.
Suicide Squad heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
