It’s official – we finally have our first look at the Ant-Man villain – Yellowjacket… and he looks a lot more intimidating than we thought.
Unveiled by the folks at Entertainment Weekly this impressive image gives us a detailed close-up of Yellowjacket – the villainous version of Ant-Man, otherwise known as Darren Cross.
And it seems he has a few tricks up his sleeve…
“Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit doesn’t have a single weapon,” said director Peyton Reed, “whereas Yellowjacket is armed with plasma cannons.”
In the awesome image, you can see Marvel villain Yellowjacket (played by Corey Stoll) throwing a punch at poor Ant-Man… and with the extremities of his suit glowing blue, it looks as though he could even be packing stinger blasts – a power first wielded in the comic books by Ant-Man’s wife, Janet Van Dyne.
But will Yellowjacket’s tech put Ant-Man at a huge disadvantage? Maybe not…
“Ant-Man is very fast when he’s small,” said Reed. “Also, when he shrinks, he increases his density, so he’s got increased strength.”
Of course, Yellowjacket’s suit will likely give him the similar, if not the same abilities… so when they finally go head-to-head, those added extras on Yellowjacket’s suit are bound to come into play.
Obviously, a film like Ant-Man makes extensive use of special effects… and when it comes to the fight between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket, that’s no exception. Thankfully, Paul Rudd took to motion capture rather easily…
“It was a new experience as far as the motion-capture-suit-ness of it,” said Rudd. “But none of it feels that different. Every part, I’m pretending to be somebody I’m not. It’s all just a big lie!”
But what about those reports of a massive reshoot? It seems perhaps we shouldn’t take them quite so seriously…
“I love turning on the computer in the morning and reading the things that I did the day before—that I didn’t do!” he says. “We are going to do a little bit of additional photography, but we have not done any yet. It’s minor stuff.”
Either way, it looks as though we have plenty to look forward to… and Yellowjacket looks suitably awesome.
Ant-Man heads to cinemas on 17 July 2016.
