Although the world awaits the first official Star Wars VII trailer, it looks as though Lucasfilm has something else to share with us first – their new animated musical, Strange Magic.
Based on a story by Star Wars creator George Lucas, this madcap, fairy tale musical takes us into a world that’s a far cry from the galaxy far, far away… and now we get our first look at this awesome new movie.
Inspired by classic pop tunes, the Imperial March is replaced by pop songs from the last six decades… and based on the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream it looks as though this animated musical is about to take the box office by storm.
“[Lucas] really wanted to make a beautiful fairy tale with goblins and elves, and do it in a way that only this company can do,” said director Gary Rydstrom. “He had been working on it for a long time.”
Set between two magical kingdoms, the story is split between a land that’s home to “fairies, elves, imps and all sorts of creatures,” and another kingdom which is filled with “scary goblins and other nasty creatures.” And while the loyal denizens never venture out of their respective worlds, it doesn’t take long for the two to get acquainted… especially when a forbidden love potion is set loose.
“All heck breaks loose,” said Rydstrom. And apparently, the film is all about “finding beauty in strange places.”
Of course, that’s not all… Strange Magic is also backed by a host of classic pop tunes – from Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love to Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger. But will this cool new movie help Lucasfilm establish itself as a company that doesn’t just make Star Wars movies?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But while it may look like a standard animated affair, I can’t help thinking Strange Magic may have a few tricks up its sleeves.
