X-Men’s Gambit will be getting a solo movie sooner than we thought… as Channing Tatum prepares to suit up in 2016.
Gambit is perhaps one of the coolest X-Men characters from the comic books… aside from Wolverine, of course. But so far, he’s been suspiciously absent from the X-Men line-up on the big screen. After making a slightly-dodgy debut appearance in the much-loathed X-Men Origins: Wolverine it looks as though he’ll be back… and now we have an official release date.
According to The Wrap, Channing Tatum will pick up that Bo staff in 2016… after 20th Century Fox released a slew of upcoming release dates.
“Fox has unveiled a slew of release dates including one for Channing Tatum‘s Gambit, which will open on Oct. 7, 2016,” they revealed. And this was later confirmed by Channing Tatum himself.
“How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?” he said via Twitter.
Of course, this places Channing Tatum’s first Gambit solo film within a couple of weeks of Marvel’s upcoming superhero debut, Black Panther. At least, here in the UK. Although we have to admit – the UK release of Gambit is likely to be a bit earlier.
Still, it makes October 2017 an interesting debut month for some of Marvel’s forgotten super heroes. And that could mean a super-powered battle at the box office.
But will Channing Tatum be able to wrangle a decent first outing just as Chadwick Boseman takes centre stage as Marvel’s first black superhero?
I can’t help thinking this is going to be an interesting month… and with the two films likely to cause a lot of stir amongst comic book fans, it could be enough for both to do equally well at the box office.
But which will be better?
For now, very little is known about either project, apart from the actors who will play each character. Of course, Marvel has the might of the MCU behind them. But 20th Century Fox aren’t exactly lightweights either. And with the X-Men franchise going from strength to strength, I can’t help thinking this could be the Gambit movie we’ve been waiting for.
But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Gambit heads to cinemas on 7 October 2017.
