Game of Thrones might eventually head to the big screen, as Charles Dance reveals that there’s already talk of a fantasy feature film.
During an interview with The Daily Beast, Tywin Lannister himself – or Charles Dance to his friends – revealed that there are already talks of a Game of Thrones movie.
“There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines,” he said. “There’s so much to cram into a film.”
Of course, that’s really not much to go on… unlike the sheer volume of storylines that could possibly make it into a Game of Thrones movie. But would a feature film be a completely stand-alone project, or would it tie into the series?
There’s always the possibility of capping off the end of a season, using a feature film to wrap up one of the upcoming storylines. But while it’s easy to see how that would work within the context of the show, it doesn’t exactly make for compelling viewing for people who may not be familiar with the series.
But what about a spin-off which focusses on characters who have been off screen for some time?
We’ve already heard that Bran and Hodor won’t be returning for the upcoming season… and while it’s assumed that the pair will follow a similar storyline to the books, there’s always the possibility of taking these popular characters off on their own mini-adventure.
And then there’s the notion of a Game of Thrones prequel…
George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg could well be an interesting direction to take a feature film, following the exploits of Ser Duncan the Tall and the future king Aegon V Targaryen a good 90 years before the series.
Of course, for now we’ll have to wait and see. And with Season Five still shooting, it looks as though it’ll be some time before a Game of Thrones movie makes it to our screens. But will Charles Dance himself land a role in the rumoured movie?
Perhaps that’s something else the fans would love to see…
