After the death of Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 it looks as though Emma Stone may return in the upcoming sequel… and no, it’s apparently not a flashback.
According to Christian Today, the 25-year-old actress will be returning to the Spider-Man franchise in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 3.
“Rumors are circulating that Peter Parker’s lady love, who died at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will come back from the grave,” they explain. “Based on the comic books, a professor from the Empire State University who fell in love with Gwen went nuts when she died. He started calling himself The Jackal, and created a clone based on Gwen to bring her back to life.”
Of course, fans of the Marvel comic books will recognise this as the start of the Clone Saga – a storyline which saw the introduction of numerous Spider-Man clones as well as the aforementioned Gwen Stacy. But will Sony really bring this to the big screen?
It’s no secret that Sony is having a bit of trouble with the faltering Spider-Man franchise. And while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did rather well at the box office, critical reactions suggest that the same might not be said of the upcoming sequel.
But is the Clone Saga really the right direction?
If you ask me, it’s certainly plausible. After all, with the Sinister Six getting their own spin-off movie, it’s likely that these particular villains could suffer from a case of oversaturation if they’re brought back right away for The Amazing Spider-Man 3. And with The Jackal still a fresh face when it comes to the movie universe, it’s another new player that could reignite interest in Spider-Man.
But whether it’s plausible or not, the big question is whether they should…
I can’t help thinking that the Clone Saga is a particularly messy story to bring to the big screen… and considering Sony’s history with overcrowded Spider-Man movie, is it really such a good idea to use a story with so many new characters?
Personally, I’d rather see the Green Goblin get his fair share of screen time. After all, Dane DeHaan looked wonderful in the Goblin suit… and it was perhaps the only saving grace for a film that failed to grab our attention.
