Wolverine star Hugh Jackman never wants to give up being a superhero.
There’s been plenty of speculation about what will happen to the X-Men franchise when Hugh Jackman eventually gives up the role of Wolverine. Will they recast the role? Who will eventually take over?
I get the feeling we’ve got a long wait before we find out… as Hugh Jackman appears keen to keep hold of the role.
During an interview with Cigar Aficionado (via E! Online), the 46-year-old Wolverine revealed how Michael Keaton’s Birdman inspired him…
“I said to my wife, ‘The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die’.” He explained. “I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor… I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”
Of course, Jackman is far from over the hill… and judging by his action-packed performance in The Wolverine, he’s got quite a few years yet before he eventually hangs up his claws. But is he still up to the rigorous fitness regimes?
“I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one,” he said. “I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding. Every time I play Wolverine I want to go further, physically and emotionally.”
But how long can he really keep that up?
Hugh Jackman will undoubtedly make an appearance in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse and has been reported to be starring in another Wolverine solo movie. So for now, it looks as though he’s safe in the role for a few more years.
But what happens after that remains a mystery…
Will 20th Century Fox be keen to move him on in favour of a younger Wolverine? Could we see him take on an Old Man Logan storyline as Jackman grows into the role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I get the feeling he’ll be a hard man to replace.
X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
