Hugh Jackman is optimistic that X-Men hero Wolverine will one day join The Avengers on the big screen… but can it really happen?
During an interview with our pals at Yahoo! Movies UK, the 46-year-old Wolverine said that he thinks the X-Men will one day appear alongside Marvel’s Avengers.
“You know, I think as an optimist I would love it,” he said. “That’s the best thing about comic books; you can just pitch these characters into each other.”
And it looks as though Marvel’s recent Spider-Man deal may have paved the way for a greater level of inter-studio co-operation.
“I’m surprised by what’s happened with Spider-Man joining,” he said. “You’re in a very complex world where big, big sums of money are being spent for different franchises and so getting them together is difficult.”
Of course, Jackman’s comments really highlight the bigger picture – that Marvel’s deal with Sony has shifted the goalposts when it comes to superhero movie rights. The notion that two competing studios can come together and share the rights for a particular character is unheard of… or at least, it was.
“Two years ago I’d have said you’d be a real optimist to think it’d ever happen,” he said about a potential X-Men crossover. “But weirdly now I just think it maybe could. I think there is the possibility that it will happen.”
Over the years, Hugh Jackman himself has been rather vocal when it comes to getting the big superheroes together…and at one stage, there was even talk of a Wolverine cameo in a recent ‘Spider-Man’ movie.
“In the first Spider-Man we really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something,” he revealed. “The problem was, we couldn’t find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn’t get it together.”
But could 20th Century Fox be more open to collaborating after the Spider-Man deal?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see…
