Indiana Jones will be back in the officially confirmed Indiana Jones 5.
According to the official press release, Harrison Ford will once again don the iconic fedora in the upcoming Indiana Jones sequel… and he’ll even be joined by director Steven Spielberg.
“Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series,” they revealed. “Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.”
Of course, a new Indiana Jones movie has been on the cards for a while, after Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012. But while alt Disney Studios has continually expressed interest in reviving the franchise, we’ve had no official word on the project.
That is, until now.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Chairman of Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
Frank Marshall (original producer of Raiders of the Lost Ark) will be returning to produce Indiana Jones 5 and this time, brings along Kathleen Kennedy.
But interestingly, there’s no mention of original creator, George Lucas.
Does this mean he won’t be working on the upcoming Indiana Jones sequel?
That’s certainly a possibility – after all, he wasn’t really involved in the production of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, either. And that’s definitely a good thing… if only because it grants the new creative team far more control.
But what does the future hold for Indiana Jones?
Unfortunately, we know little else about Indiana Jones 5 except that Harrison Ford will reprise the iconic role. But with Ford reaching the grand old age of 77 by the time the movie is released, it looks as though it could be his last big adventure.
Does this mean he’ll be handing the whip to someone else?
Disney has already confirmed that they won’t be recasting Indy himself… so it looks as though we may get some further adventures with a younger Jones family member.
Let’s just hope this doesn’t mean the return of Shia LaBeouf as Mutt.
