Suicide Squad is having trouble forming a team, as Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly turns down the role of Rick Flagg Jr.
After Tom Hardy’s rather abrupt departure, it looks as though the search is on to find his replacement. The role of Rick Flagg Jr – one of DC‘s main characters from the Squad – is still up for grabs.
And while Warner Bros. reportedly offered the part to Jake Gyllenhaal, it seems he wasn’t interested.
According to Variety, the 34-year-old actor has been offered a role in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie… but subsequently turned it down.
“Suicide Squad still looks to be one member short,” they explain. “Following Tom Hardy’s departure from the role of Rick Flag, sources [say] that Jake Gyllenhaal has passed on an offer to play the leader of the superhero team.”
I can’t help thinking that this isn’t a huge surprise. After all, Gyllenhaal’s schedule is already rather busy, with several films opening in 2015 that might clash with the filming of Suicide Squad. And on top of that, he’s really started to carve a name for himself as a more serious actor. Would he really want to appear in a comic book movie after all that?
Either way, it looks as though Warner Bros. is stuck with a bit of a problem – who are they going to get to play Rick Flagg Jr?
It’s a role that seems to have scared off one of their male leads… and with rumours suggesting that it’s because of a change in the script, you have to wonder whether or not they’ll decide to take another look at it.
Unfortunately, that still means that Suicide Squad is a man down… at least, for now. But who will they get to play him? We’ll have to just wait and see.
