Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was green lit before the first movie even hit cinemas… but could there be a third in the works already?
In an interview with The Playlist, director James Gunn hinted that we might eventually see a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
“We open up on a Mission: Impossible scenario where all the characters die,” he joked. “No, to be honest, I had the basic story for number two while I was working on number one, and perhaps even beyond that. So it’s gonna answer a lot of questions that are proposed in the first one, and we’ll be able to get to know some of the characters we didn’t get to know in the first one a little bit more, and we might meet a few new characters too.
Of course, this is great news for Guardians fans… and while some film makers struggle to come to terms with Marvel’s level of control over their films, it looks as though James Gunn continues to thrive.
“I very much knew that there were certain things about Guardians that needed to stay the Marvel way,” he said. “But then figuring out a way around them to do my own thing was I think part of what made me have so much fun with the movie. So there’s always those things, whether they’re budgetary or otherwise. And even on Guardians, there was a lot of budgetary constraints.”
Obviously, Marvel is yet to confirm plans for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and have only just issued the second movie with an official release date…. But that doesn’t mean it’s not on the cards and may even have been discussed as a potential move. But at this stage, it’s likely to not find its way onto the Marvel slate until post-2020.
After all, Marvel’s recent full reveal announced every Marvel movie up until that date.
But it looks as though Gunn is keen to continue what he started. Whether or not Marvel will want him around remains to be seen, but I get the feeling they’re just as keen as he is. I mean, he’s practically the Joss Whedon of Marvel’s cosmic franchise… and that’s a pretty cool place to be.
