Although there are no plans for a Planet Hulk movie as yet, Marvel director Joss Whedon thinks it could happen.
During an interview with IGN, the Avengers: Age of Ultron director explained that Planet Hulk could happen eventually… but whether it should is another matter entirely.
“It absolutely could be put onscreen,” he said. “I don’t know if it should. I think part of what makes the Hulk great is the world around him and the Banner of it. And it would be mad expensive as well. I think if they were going to do a Hulk movie, they’d want to keep it more grounded.”
Of course, Whedon’s take on what would make a good Hulk solo film makes an awful lot of sense. After all, it’s the interesting internal conflict between Banner and the Hulk which provides the most drama… and to take that away could dilute some of the Hulk’s biggest selling points.
But what’s stopping Mark Ruffalo from getting a solo Hulk movie?
“Honestly I think it’s a legal thing,” he explained. “I think it’s because there’s other studio rights and this and that. It’s difficult. Hulk movies are very difficult because it isn’t a classic superhero story. It is more of a werewolf story, and finding a way to thread both of those makes if difficult. But I think it has more to do with the boring issues… because they love the Hulk and they love Mark as much as I do.”
Of course, the film rights to Hulk’s solo endeavours currently rest with Universal Pictures… and it sounds as though it could simply be the case that Marvel and Universal haven’t been able to reach an agreement.
Although a Hulk solo film won’t be heading our way for Marvel’s Phase Three, it sounds as though that’s not because the studio doesn’t want to make one.
But if you ask me, it’s about time Marvel and Universal got talking.
