Although Quicksilver played a pivotal role in X-Men: Days of Future Past it looks as though it was almost Juggernaut who saved the day. And it would have been very different…
During an interview on the Empire Podcast, the X-Men director revealed his plans for Days of Future Past… and it would have seen Juggernaut used to break Magento out of jail.
“I had Juggernaut being thrown out of a plane at 20,000 feet,” he revealed, “and using his head to go down a hole to get to the bottom of [The White House].”
Of course, Quicksilver’s super speed was eventually used to spring Magneto from his White House cell… and it led to Evan Peters being given probably the most impressive scene in the entire film.
After all, the slow-motion kitchen fight was a sight to behold.
But while we knew Juggernaut was originally intended for the jailbreak scene, this is the first time we’ve actually found out what it would have involved. And I have to admit, it’s not even a patch on what eventually made it to the big screen.
“I had Beast saying, ‘I have a plan,’ and [Juggernaut] replying, ‘What’s the plan? What’s the plan?’, and they go higher and higher and Beast was going to go, ‘This is it!’ and chuck him out the window. Then he goes smashing through [The White House] with this and Magneto goes, ‘Who the fuck are you?’”
I can’t help thinking that the scenes we ended up with were a whole lot better. After all, the Quicksilver slow-motion effects were strikingly good. And it seems that all those great shots would have been replaced by a guy smashing his way into the White House.
Not exactly inventive.
But then, Matthew Vaughn admits that Quicksilver’s jailbreak was “the best scene in the movie”. “I would have made the movie worse,” he added with a laugh. “The Quicksilver one was better.”
But will Juggernaut eventually return?
After Vinny Jones played the colossal mutant in X-Men: The Last Stand, we’re yet to see another iteration of the kinetically-charged villain. And I can’t help thinking that’s probably a good thing. But then, perhaps Juggernaut deserves a decent reboot.
Will we see him again? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it’s unlikely that he’ll return in X-Men: Apocalypse.
X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016.
