Kate Beckinsale May Return To Underworld

Kate Beckinsale won’t be in the next Underworld movie… but she could return after that.

15th October 2014 by Ryan Leston

Kate Beckinsale may return to Underworld

Although a fifth Underworld film is expected in 2015, it’s rumoured that Kate Beckinsale might sit that one out… but don’t worry – a sixth instalment will eventually herald her return.

Underworld: Next Generation was originally meant to be a reboot for the slightly-ageing series… presumably to latch onto the Twilight generation of vampire fans. But now that it’s been reimagined as another entry in the series, it looks as though there’s plenty of room for Kate Beckinsale to return.

Dracula Untold Joins Universal Monsters Franchise

In an interview with IGN, Underworld director/producer Len Wiseman dropped some hints about the future of the ‘Underworld’ franchise… and that Kate Beckinsale may return for yet-another movie.

“There’s a few things being developed right now,” he explained. “There’s some characters that we really like as more of a spin-off… like we did with ‘Rise of the Lycans’. Another film is also being developed – in the works – with Kate, possibly. And then there’s a television series as well, so it’s all kind of expanding that universe in many ways.”

But when are we likely to see these new projects?

“Everything’s in development,” he said. “There’s a lot of releases that aren’t true.”

And it certainly sounds as though we won’t be seeing more from the Underworld franchise for some time. Still, at least it’s on the cards.

The Underworld franchise has so far spawned four impressive films, starting with the original Underworld back in 2003. And while it was rumoured for some time that Kate Beckinsale would leave the franchise, it seems that’s very much not the case.

Of course, developing Underworld into its own universe seems a bit of a stretch. But with Marvel and DC setting the bar when it comes to expanded movie tie-ins, it looks as though everyone is trying to get a piece of the action. But will Underworld be able to match up to Universal’s Monsters franchise?

Ghostbusters Gets An All-Female Cast

The return of Kate Beckinsale certainly adds some weight to the franchise. After all, it was her original appearance that really grabbed the attention of the audience… and the fans will no doubt be pleased to see her back.

Will it be enough for another successful instalment? We’ll have to wait and see… but it’s good to see that Selene isn’t completely out of the picture.

Do you think Kate Beckinsale should return to the Underworld franchise? Would it really be the same without her? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
