Kingsman: The Secret Service isn’t the last time we’ll see Eggsy suit up… as 20th Century Fox begins work on a sequel.
According to The Wrap, a second instalment to the highly-successful Kingsman: The Secret Service is already in the works.
“A sequel to the surprise blockbuster Kingsman: The Secret Service is in the works at Fox,” they revealed. “There was no announcement by the studio or a timetable, but there will be a follow up to the R-rated comic book adaptation directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Colin Firth.”
Of course, this makes a lot of sense… especially when you consider that the first film has just topped $400 million at the global box office. And that’s quite an impressive feat for a movie that doesn’t rely on an established franchise to back it up.
And when you consider that Kingsman opened to $41 million opposite Fifty Shades of Grey, it becomes even more impressive.
But who will be back for the sequel?
It’s pretty much a given that Taron Egerton is highly likely to return as Eggsy – the chav-turned-gentleman-spy who manages to tip expectations on their head. And despite the death of Colin Firth’s character in the first movie, there have already been hints by director Matthew Vaughn that he could be brought back for a sequel.
“A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel,” he told USA Today. “But I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back. The opening of Kingsman 2 will have a sauna and the sauna door opens and out comes Colin. It was all a dream!”
Obviously, Vaughn is merely jesting at this stage… but with such a stellar performance from Firth, I can’t help thinking it would be a huge advantage to have him back for the sequel.
And let’s face it – a spy as accomplished as Harry could surely fake his own death.
As for what the Kingsman sequel will be about, at this stage it’s anyone’s guess. But expect plenty more over-the-top antics from our new favourite British spies.
