It’s been almost 30 years since we last saw David Bowie on screen in Labyrinth.
But now it looks as though the classic fantasy epic could be a getting a long awaited sequel.
According to a report at Variety, the folks at Jim Henson Co. are working on a number of new projects, including a Fraggle Rock movie, a sequel to The Dark Crystal as well as this all-new instalment of Labyrinth.
“It’s also working on a quartet of legacy titles in the Henson library — a Fraggle Rock movie that’s been in development at New Regency; a sequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal; a sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth; and a movie based on the Emmet Otter character.”
Of course, most of the fans of the original 1986 fantasy film are now all grown up… and it remains unclear whether this new sequel will be set an appropriate time after the events of the first film. Either way, it looks as though a new generation will get to appreciate the marvels of the Jim Henson Co.
But will David Bowie return?
Although Jareth certainly survives at the end of Labyrinth – transforming into his owl form before flying away into the night – that doesn’t mean that Bowie would be keen to reprise the role.
“The studio is run by the late Jim Henson’s grown children, Lisa and Brian, with a staff of about 80 employees. Lisa Henson, who’s been CEO for the past decade, previously served as president of Columbia Pictures.”
I have to admit, I’m not entirely sure what to think. After recent news that the Ghostbusters sequel will actually be a reboot, it feels as though many childhood favourites are now being ransacked just to make a quick buck.
That said, this sequel comes from the Jim Henson Co. – the same people who made the original. But will it live up to its processor? We’ll have to wait and see.
