After Supergirl landed Melissa Benoist for its leading superhero, it looks as though Laura Benanti will star as the young heroine’s mother.
According to Deadline, the 35-year-old actress has landed the role of Alura Zor-El – Supergirl’s birth mother.
“Nashville standout Laura Benanti has been cast in a key recurring role in the CBS pilot Supergirl,” they revealed. “She will play Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara (Melissa Benoist).”
But what does this mean for Supergirl?
“A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.
Based on the DC comic books, the Supergirl series will see Melissa Benoist as the 24-year-old Kara Zor-El – Superman’s younger cousin. Although hailing from the planet Krypton, it seems that Kara has done her best to hide from her past. But now, she decides to become the hero she was always meant to be… and that means she may need a spot of guidance along the way.
Thankfully, her mother is now set to appear… and this could mean a similar projection to the one we saw in Man of Steel when a hologram of Jor-El appeared to Clark.
Of course, with Benanti said to be in this as a ‘recurring role’ it sounds as though Alura will be on hand to quite a degree – doling out Kryptonian advice when Kara needs it most. But who will young Supergirl be up against?
Although several cast members have already been revealed, there’s still no hint about who the main villain might be. But there have been rumours that The Lumberjack could be the very first villain she meets.
Of course, for now we’ll have to wait and see. But with Supermom on hand, I doubt Kara will have many problems. At least, to begin with…
