After a disappointing final series, many fans were glad to see the back of Lost. But executive producer Carlton Cuse thinks it’s only a matter of time before it’s back on our screens.
It’s been ten years since Lost first aired… and I still remember the anticipation of that very first episode. But as the series rolled on, it became clear that something was amiss – plenty of fans weren’t happy. By the end of the show, each episode was receiving mixed reactions. To say that the finale split the fanbase would be an understatement. But do we really want Lost to return? It might not be long before it does…
In an interview with Digital Spy, executive producer Carlton Cuse explained why he thinks it’s due for a miraculous comeback.
“Disney owns the franchise,” he said. “It made them a lot of money, it’s hard to imagine it will just sit there idly forever.”
I can sort of see his point – after all, the first few seasons of the hit TV show pulled enormous viewing figures… and even in its later stages, managed a respectable audience.
“Damon (Lindelof) and I told our story in that world and I assume someone will come along, hopefully having been inspired by our story, or our version of the story, and want to tell their own story.”
Does this mean that door is open for a Lost spin-off? More importantly, could the ending end up as malleable as the mythos behind the show?
“It’s like the Narnia chronicles,” he added. “There are seven books, they were all written by CS Lewis, but they all visit Narnia at different times and different configurations and different ways.”
Obviously, this sort of approach lends itself to the whole Lost concept. After all, alternate dimensions and different versions of the island would be nothing compared to time travel, flash-sideways and big, frozen underground wheels of doom.
“Someone is going to come up with a way to tell another Lost story,” he said. “I think it’s inevitable. I don’t know what it is or how it would work, but I can’t imagine something else won’t be done with the franchise.”
Honestly, I’d love to get my hands on the Lost mythos and create my own take on the mysterious island. Of course, I can’t be the only one… and I get the feeling Cuse is right – it’s only a matter of time before Disney takes Lost out of the archives and dusts it off.
Will they improve on the original show? Only time will tell. But at least it can’t be as awful as the final episode.
