Comic book creator Mark Millar has some idea who Martin Freeman will be playing in Captain America: Civil War and it’s not a superhero.
During an interview with the Radio Times, the legendary comic book writer revealed that he knows who Martin Freeman is playing. And it’s apparently an obvious choice.
“I know who he’s playing in the film, but I guess it’s still a secret,” said Millar, who wrote the original Civil War comic books. “The character is not a super-person, it’s somebody who’s… well, I don’t want to spoil it for anybody but he’s not going to be in costume.”
“He’s a great actor,” he added. “He could play anyone – he could play Hit-Girl!”
Although unfortunately, Millar wouldn’t reveal any further details.
“Once you get to see it, it’s so obvious,” Millar teased. “All I’ll say is, he’s not [Captain America villain] the Red Skull.”
Of course, I think it’s safe to say that most of us assumed that Freeman wouldn’t be donning a cape anytime soon… and that his role is perhaps a little more down to earth. But who will he be playing? There’s already been plenty of speculation.
The two names which frequently come up in geeky conversation are Everett Ross – our own personal favourite – and Henry Peter Gyrich. Both of these characters provide a sort-of liaison for the Avengers… and it’s entirely possible that either character could feasibly turn up in Civil War.
Of course, for now we’ll have to wait and see. But Martin Freeman joining the MCU is an exciting prospect. Let’s just hope he eventually gets to meet Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.
Captain America: Civil War heads to cinemas on 29 April 2016.
