Black Widow is closer to getting her own movie.
That’s right – the project now has a writer on board.
According to The Wrap, it looks as though Marvel is finally taking Black Widow seriously… and has tapped Black List alum Jac Schaeffer to write a script for the long-awaited solo film.
“Marvel Studios has picked Blacklist Screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to write ‘Black Widow’, the first solo film featuring the marvel superhero played since 2010 by Scarlett Johansson.”
But who is Jac Schaeffer?
Schaeffer made her film debut in 2009 with the Tribeca film TiMER, and has since written a 2014 Blacklist script, The Shower – a female-centric action flick with Anne Hathaway set to star and produce. She’s also the writer behind Nasty Women – the upcoming female remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.
Of course, Black Widow is a very popular Marvel character.
Most importantly, fans have been clamouring for a Black Widow solo film ever since her introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, way back in Iron Man 2. She’s since become a Marvel movie staple, with Scarlett Johansson set to appear in the upcoming event movie, Avengers Infinity War.
And a solo movie makes a lot of sense.
There’s been a real need to redress the balance of Male/Female superheroes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – especially after Wonder Woman went down so well. And with Captain Marvel due to get her own solo movie in 2019, it’s about time Scarlett Johansson took centre stage, too.
Unfortunately, we don’t know when that will be.
“Marvel hasn’t set a date for a Black Widow film just yet.”
Given that Marvel’s upcoming slate is pretty packed until 2019, it looks as though we’ll probably have to wait until after the untitled Avengers: Infinity War sequel. Still, it’s great that Black Widow is finally getting her own solo movie.
And it’s about time, really.
Black Widow will next appear in Avengers: Infinity War alongside Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bethany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin.
Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the film, based on a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
Avengers: Infinity War heads to cinemas on 27 April 2018.
