After an off-hand comment by friend Robert Downey Jr. it looks as though Mel Gibson is actually interested in directing a Marvel movie… but would the studio have him?
It’s no secret that Robert Downey Jr. recently made some choice comments about Iron Man 4… and it seemed he’d only be up for the sequel if Mel Gibson was directing. But while the man himself dismissed them as off-the-cuff comments, it looks as though Gibson may have taken them to heart…
In an interview with Extra TV, the 58-year-old actor-turned-director revealed that he’d love to direct a Marvel superhero movie. In particular, the rumoured (but still not confirmed) Iron Man 4.
“Of course,” he said. “I’m pretty good at directing. I think I got some statues for it. I think I can do it.”
Obviously, it’s a very different style to anything Gibson has done before… and even if he could come up to scratch, there’s the small matter of whether Marvel would even want him in the first place. After all, his recent reputation isn’t exactly family-friendly.
“I think I’m a better director than actor,” he added. “I hope somebody gives me an argument on that.”
It was reported earlier this year that Robert Downey Jr. was willing to return for a fourth Iron Man movie… as long as Mel Gibson was sat in the director’s chair. But Downey soon quashed that rumour in a Reddit AMA.
“It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend,” he said. “I have other projects in mind for Mel and I.”
Quite what those other projects are (and whether or not they involve Marvel Studios) remains to be seen… but I can’t help thinking it might be wishful thinking on Mel Gibson’s part. The big problem is still Gibson’s reputation.
Although Downey Jr. was given a second chance, can he secure the same for his pal? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I wouldn’t bank on a Mel Gibson Iron Man movie just yet.
