Melissa McCarthy can’t wait to get stuck into the new Ghostbusters reboot… as she reveals how excited she is about the film.
During an interview with Total Film, the 44-year-old comedy actress admitted that she can’t wait to start on the new Ghostbusters movie.
“Oh my god, I cannot be more excited to reboot it,” said McCarthy. “I mean, I’m a huge Ghostbusters fan – who isn’t? I’ve seen that movie, like, 50,000 times. I just introduced it to my two kids, who loved it.”
Of course, the controversial project has been met with mixed reactions after it was officially announced that Paul Feig would direct… with an all-female team of Ghostbusters. The movie soon met with criticism after it was revealed that the new film would be a reboot. And with a team made up entirely of women, there have been swift comparisons between the new film and the likes of hit comedy, Bridesmaids.
But Melissa McCarthy doesn’t seem too worried about all that…
“To get to work on such a great thing with that group of women is a dream,” she added. “I’ve known Kristen [Wiig] forever, and I know Kate [McKinnon] and Leslie [Jones] from SNL, so it’s just going to be a blast.”
Speaking for herself and the rest of the Ghostbusters cast, McCarthy added that she thinks they can bring something fresh and new to this rebooted, retro classic.
“Absolutely. For sure,” she said. “Yes because it’s a female cast, but also because is going to put a really modern, current twist on it. It will be scary and have good action. He pulls from the classics but he’s a very modern director. I truly believe they could not have picked a better director to launch that franchise.”
Obviously, the real proof will be the final film… and with shooting not yet started, it looks as though we have a long wait before we find out if the Ghostbusters reboot is any good. But I can’t help erring on the side of caution.
After all, Ghostbusters is such a beloved franchise to so many people. And while I wouldn’t say that it’s ruining anyone’s childhood, it’s certainly distorting a cultural icon.
But with Melissa McCarthy in the leading role, at least it’ll be hilariously funny.
