Michael Fassbender’s X-Men Deal Ends With Apocalypse

X-Men star Michael Fassbender may be bowing out as Magneto.

16th May 2015 by Ryan Leston

X-Men Michael Fassbender

After the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse Michael Fassbender will have reached the end of his contract … but will 20th Century Fox renew his deal?

During an interview with Variety the 38-year-old Magneto revealed that his contract ends after X-Men: Apocalypse but he’d love to stay in the role.

“I will shoot a hundred of them,” he said. “The contract is in three film deals, and this is the last of that. But I’ll be curious to see what happens next.”

Asa Butterfield Reportedly Cast As Spider-Man

Of course, Michael Fassbender plays the iconic X-Men villain, Magneto – a role which previously belonged to Sir Ian McKellan. But with the older X-Men seemingly bowing out of the franchise, it’s down to the likes of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy to carry the torch.

And Fassbender isn’t planning to pass it on anytime soon.

Unfortunately, I get the feeling it will be some time before we find out the future of the X-Men series. After all, Apocalypse is still in production… and with a number of younger mutants leaving the ensemble cast, it’s difficult to see where they’re going to go from here.

I mean, let’s face it – with Jennifer Lawrence leaving the franchise, there’s a strong possibility that Mystique won’t make it through Apocalypse in one piece. And with an influx of new mutants, it raises serious questions about the rest of the cast.

And then there’s Hugh Jackman, who will be exiting the role of Wolverine after his next solo movie.

Could now be the perfect time to change up the X-Men lineup?

Either way, I can’t help thinking that 20th Century Fox will be keen to keep hold of Michael Fassbender. Ever since his first appearance in X-Men: First Class, he’s turned in some truly remarkable performances as the young Erik Lensherr. And I get the feeling there’s still plenty of story to tell.

X-Men Spin-Off: The New Mutants In The Works

Of course, it all depends on what happens in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Will Magento come out the other side unscathed? Could he be mourning the loss of some of his comrades by then? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

X-Men: Apocalypse heads to cinemas on 19 May 2016

Do you think Michael Fassbender will return after X-Men: Apocalypse? Could anyone else play the young Magneto at this point? Let us know what you think in the comments below…
