Michael Keaton may join another classic movie franchise, as he courts a role in the upcoming monster movie Kong: Skull Island.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 63-year-old Batman star is currently in talks for a role in Kong: Skull Island.
“Michael Keaton is capitalizing on his Birdman heat by engaging in talks to join Legendary’s big-budget monster movie Skull Island,” they revealed. “If a deal makes, Keaton would join another awards season favorite, J.K. Simmons, and Tom Hiddleston in the movie about a team of explorers trekking to the home of King Kong.”
Considered to be a reboot to the franchise following Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong, the upcoming Skull Island is set in a ‘new distinct timeline’ according to the studio… and that essentially means it’s time for a reboot.
Whether or not Skull Island will take cues from the originals (or Jackson’s attempt to recreate the 1930s setting) remains to be seen. But twelve years after the latest Kong movie, perhaps it’s time to bring the monstrous ape back to our screens.
Of course, there’s no word yet on what Keaton’s role will be in the upcoming monster reboot… but after his performance in Birdman I can’t help thinking he’s likely to play the part of a seasoned explorer. And perhaps Tom Hiddleston’s character will be forced to turn to him for help.
Obviously, this is just speculation at this stage… but more on this as we hear it.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts will be directing the upcoming Kong movie, with a script by John Gatins, based on a first draft by Max Borenstein.
Kong: Skull Island heads to cinemas on 10 March 2017.
